This CD is a collection of traditional songs from the Arabic Classical and popular repertoire. Tracks 3,5 and 7 are vocal songs from the Muwashah tradition where devotional poetry is set to exquisite melodies and hypnotic rhythms. Maryem learned these songs in Aleppo, Syria in 1996 from Mahmoud Faris, a member of Al-Turath Ensemble. Alongside the Muwashahat, we have included some instrumental improvisations featuring the oud, qanun, nay, kawal and various percussion instruments, as well as a Qasida (a sung poem in classical Arabic) on track 8 made famous by Egypt's Om kalsoum and a popular folk song made famous by iraq's Nazem El Ghazali on track 10.
