Blood on the sidewalk, blood on the doors Blood on the cross, blood on the walls ... We walk on broken streets, we drink dirty water, we eat poisoned food, But the leaders swear that everything is good We sell all that is sacred, dirt cheap We imprison children and kill our youth Innocent blood is a debt, innocent blood is a debt Judgment Day is coming

Peace means justice, what is lost will be returned The land will go back to her children no matter how many years have passed Peace is not just a word, Peace is a brave step Peace means justice The times will not defeat us

about

The group name Al Qahwa is Arabic for "the coffee house" where in the past, people used to go to the coffee house to hear music, poetry, stories and the news of the day. African Routes is the 3rd CD for this group and it is inspired by the countries of birth of Maryem Tollar (Egypt) and 2 of the guests on this recording: Fethi Nadjem (Algeria) and Waleed Abdulhamid (Sudan). All of the songs on this recording draw inspiration from the music of North Africa. The guests were invited to contribute songs, or to help arrange songs that Maryem brought to them. They came together with Al Qahwa (Maryem Tollar, Ernie Tollar, Demetri Petsalakis, Naghmeh Farahmand) a few times and then performed the songs for a live audience at Small World Music Centre. Roula Said joined the group to add a dance element to the evening, as well as contributing to the music with vocals and zills. This live CD is the result of that collaboration.
